Do I Need to Lodge a TPAR?
Whether you run a larger business or an SME, if your business works with contractors, there’s a reporting requirement that often slips under the radar — the Taxable Payments Annual Report (TPAR).
It’s not universal, but it’s common across industries like construction, cleaning and IT services.
The deadline for TPAR is 28 August each year, and the ATO is paying closer attention to businesses that fail to lodge.
If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, start here:
Do you regularly engage contractors rather than employees?
Are those contractors in relevant industries (construction, cleaning, IT, etc.)?
Have your contractor payments increased as your business has grown?
If that sounds familiar, TPAR is worth looking into.
The ATO has begun issuing penalties to businesses that ignore repeated reminders, which is often how this gets picked up.
If you don’t need to lodge, you still need to formally notify them.
This is a good example of where a small business accountant in Melbourne adds value — not by doing something complex, but by making sure nothing gets missed.
